Series|Healthcare x CX – A Serious Journey Toward Patient Centricity(8-part series)― Part 1(2/6)

II. The background behind why Patient Centricity is being
emphasized by both pharmaceutical companies and
healthcare institutions (hospitals)

◆Healthcare isn’t just about curing, it’s about caring!
Patient voices are now shaping the future of medicine.
Patient Centricity is the new standard for inclusive, human-centered care.
“Good healthcare” no longer simply means cutting-edge treatments or accurate diagnoses. What truly matters is how the patient experiences their care, this shift in focus is gaining traction worldwide. We sincerely hope that more patients will become engaged with their own healthcare to meet greater patient experiences.

◆The Future of Healthcare Lies Not Only in “Curing” but in “Caring”:
How Patient Centricity is Transforming the Industry
How Patient Centricity is Transforming the Industry
The future of healthcare lies not only in curing but also in caring. Listening to every patient’s voice and integrating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) into care delivery is the key to building a truly patient-centered healthcare system.
In recent years, the concept of "Patient Centricity" has rapidly gained attention in both pharmaceutical companies and healthcare institutions (hospitals). Whereas traditional healthcare models centered around doctors and providers, we are now in an era where care must be delivered from the patient's perspective. Several factors are driving this shift.
1. Improving Quality of Care and Redefining Treatment Outcomes
The goal of healthcare has expanded beyond simply curing illness to achieving more holistic outcomes, including the patient’s quality of life (QOL) and the patient’s experience of care. Pharmaceutical companies are placing greater emphasis on how new drugs can improve a patient’s overall life. At the same time, hospitals are promoting personalized medicine and working to improve patient satisfaction by incorporating patient voices into treatment plans. This represents a shift from “curing” to “supporting” in the healthcare landscape.
2. The Advancement of Digital Technology and the Democratization of Information
With the widespread use of the internet, mobile apps, and digital platforms, patients now actively seek out medical information and participate more directly in treatment decisions. In response, healthcare providers and pharmaceutical companies are being called upon to offer clear, transparent information and to gather patient feedback in real time. Technology is enabling “listening healthcare,” making it possible to directly reflect patients’ voices in care practices.
3. Regulatory Changes and Policy Support
Regulatory bodies around the world are also shifting toward promoting Patient Centricity. For example, the use of Patient-Reported Outcomes (PROs) is expanding in drug approval processes, allowing patient perspectives to be formally incorporated into clinical trials and evaluations. In Japan, initiatives for Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) are gaining traction, with systems being developed to include patients in the very formation of healthcare policy.
Patient Centricity is not just a trend or buzzword, it is a critical approach for improving the quality of healthcare while enhancing both patient satisfaction and treatment outcomes. The future of healthcare demands collaboration between pharmaceutical companies and healthcare institutions to realize a truly patient-first model. By embedding DEI values into care systems, we can build a healthcare environment where no one is left behind and every patient is truly heard. This is to create a more responsive, inclusive, and effective healthcare system that truly prioritizes the patient.
